Sooner or later bad news comes to all of us. Like many of you, I often don’t know what to say and consequently don’t say anything. It’s not that I don’t care, but rather that I don’t want to say or do the wrong thing. I recently read a story on ABC News.com, that showed me avoiding the issue is really not the way to respond.
When someone loses their job, it might help to remind them that many great people are in the same boat. It’s not personal and they didn’t fail. It also helps to “do lunch or coffee”. Probably the best thing you can do is to offer them whatever contacts you might have to help them get started again. Don’t worry about whether your contact is hiring because you never know who they know that just might need a good hand.
In any case, if you have been a friend at the office, there are ways to remain a friend even if the business folds. Besides, you never know if the one you help today will be the one to help you tomorrow. That’s part of what the Bible refers to as the principle of Sowing and Reaping or as Mamma said, “What goes around, comes around.”
